Former Poway Councilman Pleads Not Guilty to Criminal Charges

San Diego, CA - Former Poway City Councilman Tony Blain has pleaded not guilty to a series of criminal charges, including perjury and soliciting bribes. The charges stem from allegations of misconduct during his time representing the city's 2nd Council District. Blain resigned from his position on November 5th, one day after a special election indicated voters overwhelmingly supported his recall.

The San Diego County District Attorney's Office filed five criminal charges against Blain last October. These include felony charges of perjury, soliciting a bribe, and destruction or removal of public records. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of petty theft related to the removal of a campaign sign.

Blain, 59, was arraigned Monday afternoon in the Central Courthouse. He was released on his own recognizance, with the condition that he attends all court appearances and adheres to all laws. His next court date is scheduled for late March.

The recall effort against Blain was initiated by residents who alleged he engaged in bribery attempts, vote trading, and used his position to silence critics. The City Council took action against Blain on multiple occasions, including a censure in February and again in July. The city also filed a lawsuit against him, alleging he destroyed public records and failed to comply with the California Public Records Act. The lawsuit claimed Blain conducted city business on private communication channels and then deleted some of those messages.

Blain has previously characterized the recall effort as a political maneuver designed to hinder his participation in council meetings and punish him for asking questions.

BNN's Perspective: This case highlights the importance of ethical conduct in public service. While the legal process will determine Blain's guilt or innocence, the allegations raise serious concerns about transparency and accountability within local government. It is crucial for elected officials to uphold the public trust and adhere to the highest standards of conduct.
