Troy Football Dominates Canyon in Iota League Matchup
Troy High School's football team secured a decisive 37-0 victory over Canyon High School on Thursday, fueled by the return of star running back Ethan Mundt. Mundt, a senior, made a significant impact in his return from an injury, rushing for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
The win solidifies Troy's position at the top of the six-team Iota League with a perfect 3-0 record. The team, currently ranked No. 23 in the Orange County Top 25, demonstrated a strong performance, particularly on defense, holding Canyon scoreless throughout the game.
The game's early momentum swung in Troy's favor when Roy Bouaker recovered a fumble and ran 94 yards for a touchdown. Mundt then added to the score with a touchdown run, and Fisher McDonald, Mundt's cousin, contributed a safety. Quarterback Mason Mays connected with Jordan Williams for a 39-yard touchdown pass, and Jackson Hintz added a 1-yard touchdown run to complete the scoring.
Canyon's offense struggled, but junior receiver Noah McClary had a standout performance, catching 14 passes for 183 yards. Senior quarterback Alexander Lundsberg completed 21 of 33 passes for 231 yards. Canyon's performance was hampered by the absence of their leading receiver, Kellen Rommelfanger, who is out for the season due to a broken collarbone.
Troy coach Michael Echaves praised his team's defensive performance, highlighting their ability to shut out Canyon.
BNN's Perspective:
While Troy's victory is impressive, it's important to acknowledge the challenges faced by Canyon, particularly the loss of a key player. This game highlights the importance of both individual talent and overall team strategy in high school football. Troy's strong performance sets a positive tone for their league campaign, but the season is still young, and they will face tougher competition ahead.
