Erie County Announces October COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics

Erie County is launching community COVID-19 vaccination clinics throughout October, offering vaccines to all residents aged six months and older. The initiative comes as the federal government reevaluates its vaccine approach, and some residents have reported challenges in accessing shots at local pharmacies.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz emphasized that the county's approach remains consistent, highlighting the support of the New York State Department of Health and its collaboration with other states to provide clear, science-based recommendations. The clinics aim to address community needs and ensure convenient access to COVID-19 protection.

Vaccinations are available without a prescription. Individuals are advised to consult their doctors for health-related questions and to understand their personal risks. Patients should bring their health insurance card and photo ID. Those without insurance will receive the vaccine at no cost. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The clinics will operate from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on specific dates and locations. A full schedule with registration options is available online, with appointments strongly encouraged, though walk-ins are welcome. Additional clinic dates will be announced based on demand.

The county is following the COVID-19 vaccine recommendations issued in September by the Northeast Public Health Collaborative, which align with guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Vaccination is recommended for all children aged 6-23 months. For children aged 2-18, vaccination is recommended for those at high risk of severe COVID-19, those in long-term care or congregate settings, those who have never been vaccinated, or those whose household members are at high risk. Healthy children and adolescents aged 2-18 may also be vaccinated at the parent or guardian's request. Vaccination is recommended for all adults aged 19-64, particularly those with risk factors, those at higher risk of exposure, and household contacts of high-risk individuals. Vaccination is also recommended for all adults 65 and older, pregnant individuals, those contemplating pregnancy, and those who are lactating. Immunocompromised individuals should consult their primary care provider regarding additional doses.

BNN's Perspective:

While the county's efforts to maintain accessible vaccination clinics are commendable, it's crucial to balance public health recommendations with individual autonomy. The focus on clear, science-based guidelines is reassuring, but residents should be empowered to make informed decisions about their health, consulting with their healthcare providers to determine the best course of action for themselves and their families.
