Edith Renfrow Smith, a remarkable woman who defied expectations and lived a life of purpose, has passed away at the age of 111. Smith, a trailblazer as the first Black woman to graduate from Grinnell College, leaves behind a legacy of academic achievement, community involvement, and enduring cognitive health.

Born in 1914, Smith's life spanned over a century, during which she witnessed and participated in significant historical events. Her parents, emphasizing the importance of education, instilled in her a lifelong commitment to learning. Smith graduated from Grinnell College in 1937 with a degree in psychology.

Following her graduation, Smith embarked on a career in education, teaching for 22 years. She also worked at the YWCA, the University of Chicago, and as a secretary.
