Boxing Legend Dwight Muhammad Qawi Passes Away at 72
Dwight Muhammad Qawi, a celebrated boxer whose journey from prison to world champion captivated the sports world, has died at the age of 72. His sister, Wanda King, confirmed that Qawi passed away on Friday after a five-year struggle with dementia.
Born Dwight Braxton, Qawi's life took a dramatic turn when he began boxing while incarcerated at Rahway State Prison. He was serving time for armed robbery. Upon his release in 1978, at the age of 25, Qawi embarked on a professional boxing career.
Qawi quickly made his mark on the sport. In December 1981, he secured the WBC light heavyweight title by defeating Matthew Saad Muhammad in the tenth round. He followed this victory with another win against Saad Muhammad eight months later.
Known for his relentless style and nicknamed "The Camden Buzzsaw," Qawi later moved up in weight and claimed the WBA cruiserweight title in July 1985, defeating Piet Crous. His career included a notable loss to future heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield in a 15-round bout in July 1986. Qawi also competed as a heavyweight, facing George Foreman, who stopped him in seven rounds.
Qawi retired from boxing in 1998 at the age of 46, with a record of 41 wins, 11 losses, and one draw, including 25 knockouts. His achievements were recognized in 2004 when he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. After his retirement, Qawi dedicated himself to helping others, working as a boxing trainer, youth advocate, and drug and alcohol counselor.
BNN's Perspective: Qawi's story is a testament to the power of redemption and the transformative potential of sports. His journey from incarceration to the pinnacle of boxing is an inspiration. While his later struggles with dementia are a reminder of the physical toll boxing can take, his legacy as a champion and a community advocate will endure.
