Dr. James Dobson, Focus on the Family Founder, Dies at 89
Dr. James Dobson, the founder of the influential Christian ministry Focus on the Family, has died at the age of 89. The Dr. James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI) announced his passing on Thursday morning. Dobson was a prominent figure in evangelical circles and a widely recognized leader who shaped the views of generations on faith, family, and culture.
Dobson founded Focus on the Family in 1977, growing it into a major evangelical ministry. He later established JDFI in 2010 to continue his work with a focus on his own broadcasts and teachings.
Throughout his career, Dobson was a prolific author, penning over 70 books on family preservation, including notable titles such as "The New Dare to Discipline." He was also a Radio Hall of Fame broadcaster.
Beyond his media presence, Dobson advised or counseled five U.S. presidents: Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump. He served on President Trump's Evangelical Executive Advisory Board, offering counsel on issues important to evangelicals.
Dobson is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley, their children, Danae and Ryan, daughter-in-law Laura, and two grandchildren.
BNN's Perspective:
Dr. Dobson's impact on American culture is undeniable. While his views on family values and faith resonated deeply with many, his influence also sparked considerable debate. His legacy will likely be viewed through the lens of his significant contributions to conservative evangelicalism and his role in shaping the national conversation on family and faith.
