DoorDash Driver Admits to $2.5 Million Delivery Scam, Faces Prison Time
A former DoorDash delivery driver has pleaded guilty to orchestrating a sophisticated scheme that defrauded the food delivery giant out of over $2.5 million. Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri, 30, of Newport Beach, California, admitted in federal court to conspiring with three others to commit wire fraud between 2020 and 2021.
According to federal prosecutors, Devagiri exploited vulnerabilities in DoorDash's system. He used customer accounts to place large, high-value orders. Then, using an employee's credentials, he accessed DoorDash software to manipulate the orders. He reassigned these orders to driver accounts controlled by himself and his accomplices.
The fraudulent drivers then falsely reported the orders as delivered, even though no food was ever actually delivered. Devagiri further manipulated the system to ensure these fake deliveries were paid out. He would then reset the orders to "in process" and repeat the cycle, maximizing the fraudulent payouts.
Devagiri is the third individual to be convicted in connection with this elaborate scam. Two co-defendants previously pleaded guilty to similar charges. Devagiri now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 16, 2025.
BNN's Perspective: This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by tech companies in combating fraud. While the scale of the theft is significant, it also underscores the importance of robust security measures and internal controls to prevent such schemes. The fact that multiple individuals were involved suggests a need for companies to be vigilant in monitoring employee access and identifying suspicious activity. This case serves as a reminder that even seemingly simple services like food delivery can be vulnerable to sophisticated criminal activity.
