Disney Extends CFO Hugh Johnston's Contract Through 2029

The Walt Disney Company has announced a contract extension for its Chief Financial Officer, Hugh Johnston, securing his position through January 31, 2029. Johnston, who joined Disney in November 2023, previously held roles at PepsiCo, succeeding Christine McCarthy as CFO.

Since joining Disney, Johnston has become a prominent figure, participating in earnings calls alongside CEO Bob Iger and representing the company at various investor events and on financial news outlets. This extension marks the third such move by Disney in recent weeks, following similar contract renewals for communications chief Kristina Schake and senior executive VP and chief legal and compliance officer Horacio Gutierrez.

These extensions come as the Disney board nears its self-imposed deadline to identify a successor to CEO Bob Iger, with early 2026 as the current target. The company's decision to retain key executives is likely aimed at providing stability during this transition period.

Johnston is well-regarded by Wall Street. His prior experience at PepsiCo, including his role as president of the North American division and senior VP of transformation, has given him extensive experience interacting with analysts and investors.

Under the new contract, Johnston's base salary and annual target bonus will remain unchanged at $2 million and $4 million, respectively. However, his long-term equity incentive annual award value has been increased to $16,500,000.

BNN's Perspective:

Disney's decision to extend Johnston's contract, along with other key executives, suggests a strategic effort to maintain continuity and confidence during a period of significant leadership transition. While the entertainment industry is constantly evolving, the move to retain experienced financial leadership, especially with a strong track record in investor relations, is a prudent one. This provides a sense of stability as the company navigates the search for a new CEO.
