The upcoming "Lord of Hatred" expansion for Diablo 4 is set to significantly alter the game's difficulty system, introducing a total of 12 Torment tiers. This represents a substantial increase from the current four tiers, aiming to provide a more engaging experience for players as they progress and strengthen their characters.

According to Blizzard, the expansion's associate game director, the expanded Torment system is designed to keep the game's world and enemies challenging and relevant as players become more powerful. The increased rewards associated with higher tiers are a key factor driving this change, prompting the inclusion of a loot filter to help players manage their gains.

While the new system will offer 12 tiers, the developers have clarified that the highest levels are intended to be aspirational, presenting a significant challenge even for seasoned players. The current Torment 4 difficulty is relatively manageable for players who have advanced their characters. The expansion's design director has stated that the 12 Torment tiers will make the increased rewards for each tier "more granular."

This isn't the first time Diablo 4 has seen a difficulty overhaul. The game initially launched with a World Tier system, which was later replaced by the current Torment system with the release of the "Vessel of Hatred" expansion in October 2024. The new 12-tier system draws inspiration from Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, which featured 16 Torment tiers.

The "Lord of Hatred" expansion will also introduce other significant changes, including the removal of passive skills from class skill trees and the addition of two new classes: the Paladin and the Warlock. Before the expansion's release, players will have one final season to experience the current difficulty system. The "Season of Slaughter," starting March 11, will draw inspiration from Diablo 3 with its Killstreak seasonal mechanic and will even make one of the franchise's iconic enemies playable.
