DHS Employee Killed in Series of Random Attacks; Suspect in Custody
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employee, Lauren Bullis, was murdered in a series of violent, seemingly random attacks in Georgia on Monday. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed the death, stating Bullis was "brutally shot and stabbed to death" while walking her dog.
The attacks, believed to be connected, began earlier that morning. A woman was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds outside a Checkers restaurant. Shortly after, a 49-year-old homeless man was shot multiple times while sleeping outside a Kroger store. The homeless man is expected to survive.
Police arrested Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a 26-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen originally from the United Kingdom, on Monday. Abel faces two counts of murder, along with charges of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to DHS, Abel has a prior criminal history, including convictions for sexual battery, assaulting a police officer, obstruction, assault with a deadly weapon, and vandalism. Secretary Mullin stated that Abel was also arrested for the murder of the woman outside the Checkers and the shooting of the homeless man.
Bullis, who worked as an auditor in the DHS Office of the Inspector General, was described by family as a keen runner.
BNN's Perspective:
This tragic event highlights the devastating impact of violent crime on individuals and communities. While the circumstances surrounding the suspect's naturalization are under scrutiny, the focus should remain on supporting the victims' families and ensuring justice is served. It is crucial to address the root causes of violence and work towards preventing such senseless acts in the future.
