Delhi Braces for Rain and Thunderstorms, IMD Issues Yellow Alert

Delhi-NCR residents are anticipating a break from the recent sweltering heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a shift in weather patterns. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for several districts, indicating the likelihood of light rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds across the national capital and surrounding areas.

The change in weather, expected to begin on Sunday evening, follows days of high temperatures. The IMD warns that strong winds and lightning could disrupt traffic during the evening and night. Specific areas, including North, Northeast, Northwest, West, South, Southwest, and Southeast Delhi, are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light rain. Similar conditions are expected in New Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram. Wind speeds during the storm could reach 40 to 50 kmph.

The Meteorological Department advises residents to take precautions against lightning and avoid seeking shelter under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms. Rain and strong winds may also cause traffic disruptions in some areas.

Despite the anticipated rain, daytime temperatures are expected to remain high, ranging between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature is expected to be between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius. However, the evening rain and winds are expected to provide some relief from the humid conditions, with a slight drop in temperatures expected during the evening and night.

Looking ahead, the Climate Change Office predicts a gradual increase in temperatures over the next two days, followed by a decline later in the week. Light rain and thundershowers are expected on May 12th, particularly in the afternoon and evening, with wind speeds potentially reaching 50 kmph. On May 13th, cloudy skies and a chance of thunderstorms are forecast for the morning. The weather is expected to clear up on May 14th and 15th, potentially leading to a rise in temperatures by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.

BNN's Perspective: While the anticipated rain offers a welcome respite from the heat, the potential for traffic disruptions and the subsequent temperature fluctuations highlight the challenges of adapting to changing weather patterns. It's crucial for residents to heed the IMD's warnings and take necessary precautions.
