Trump Takes Control of D.C. Police Amidst Rising Youth Crime

Washington, D.C. - President Donald Trump has federalized the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) for a 30-day period, citing a surge in youth violence and a perceived failure by local leaders to address the issue. This decision, made under the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, grants the president emergency control over the city's police force.

The move comes in response to a reported increase in criminal activity, including carjackings and violent incidents involving juveniles. According to a law enforcement group, the National Police Association, the rise in youth crime has created a situation where local politicians have paved the way for federal intervention.

Data indicates a consistent increase in juvenile arrests in Washington, D.C. since 2020, with over 2,000 arrests recorded in 2023 and 2024. Juveniles now account for a significant portion of certain crimes, including over 50% of robbery arrests in 2024 and nearly 60% of carjacking suspects in 2025.

The MPD has reported specific incidents, such as the carjacking of Edward Coristine by two 15-year-olds and the shooting death of Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, a congressional intern. These events, along with others, have fueled concerns about public safety.

A spokesperson for the National Police Association has expressed frustration with the current handling of juvenile offenders, stating that many are not prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The group advocates for changes in the criminal justice system to address serious juvenile crime more effectively.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has met with federal officials to discuss coordinating the increased law enforcement presence in the city.

BNN's Perspective: While the rise in youth crime is a serious concern, the federalization of the MPD raises questions about local autonomy and the long-term effectiveness of such interventions. A balanced approach that addresses both the immediate safety concerns and the underlying causes of youth violence is crucial.
