Dash Crofts, of Seals & Crofts, Dies at 87
Darrell "Dash" Crofts, one half of the soft-rock duo Seals & Crofts, has passed away at the age of 87. Crofts, who formed the band with his childhood friend Jim Seals, was known for their string of 1970s hits, including "Summer Breeze," "Diamond Girl," and "Get Closer."
The duo, both natives of Texas, blended elements of pop, country, folk, and jazz, becoming part of a wave of successful soft-rock bands. Their music often explored themes of love, peace, and the natural world, drawing inspiration from the Baháʼí faith, which they both embraced. This faith influenced their lyrics and their lives, with Crofts stating that it allowed them to express "something real" in their music.
Seals & Crofts achieved commercial success in 1972 with "Summer Breeze." Other popular singles included "I'll Play for You," "Hummingbird," and "We May Never Pass This Way (Again)." The band's music resonated with audiences, with their daughter noting that many people expressed how the music "changed their life."
The duo faced controversy in 1974 with the release of their ballad "Unborn Child," which addressed the topic of abortion. While the song sparked debate and faced radio restrictions, it also garnered support from some listeners.
By the early 1980s, the soft-rock genre declined in popularity, and Seals & Crofts were dropped by their label. They later reunited for performances and recordings. Crofts released a solo album in 1998 and reunited with Seals in 2004.
Crofts' death marks the end of an era, his daughter said, but the music will live on.
BNN's Perspective: The passing of Dash Crofts is a reminder of the enduring power of music to connect with audiences across generations. While the band's embrace of their faith may have been a source of both inspiration and controversy, their music remains a testament to the power of positive messages and the beauty of simple melodies.
