R&B Icon D'Angelo Dies at 51
The music world mourns the loss of D'Angelo, the Grammy-winning R&B artist who helped define the neo-soul movement of the 1990s. The singer's family announced Tuesday that D'Angelo, whose given name was Michael D'Angelo Archer, passed away at the age of 51 after a battle with cancer.
D'Angelo rose to prominence with his debut album, "Brown Sugar," released in 1995. The album spawned the hit single "Lady" and achieved platinum status. He followed up with the critically acclaimed "Voodoo" in 2000, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart. "Voodoo" earned D'Angelo the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album in 2001, with the single "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" winning Best R&B Performance.
After a hiatus of over a decade, D'Angelo returned with "Black Messiah" in late 2014. The album was a success, winning Best R&B Album at the 2016 Grammys. The lead single, "Really Love," won Best R&B Song and was nominated for Record of the Year.
Tributes have already begun pouring in from fellow musicians, including Flavor Flav and DJ Premier. D'Angelo's family expressed their grief while also celebrating the legacy of his music. They have requested privacy during this difficult time.
BNN's Perspective: D'Angelo's influence on R&B music is undeniable. His soulful sound and innovative approach to music production helped shape a generation of artists. His passing is a significant loss for the music industry, but his music will continue to resonate with fans for years to come.
