Cybertruck Sales Plunge: Tesla's EV Pickup Faces Headwinds
Tesla's Cybertruck is experiencing a significant downturn in sales, according to recent data. Sales figures for the second quarter of 2025 reveal a sharp decline, raising concerns about the vehicle's future in the electric vehicle (EV) market.
The latest figures from Cox Automotive's Kelley Blue Book indicate that Tesla sold only 4,306 Cybertrucks in the second quarter. This represents a substantial 50.8 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. The drop is also noticeable when compared to the previous quarter, where approximately 6,406 Cybertrucks were sold.
Year-to-date, Tesla has delivered a total of 10,712 Cybertrucks, a figure that falls far short of the 39,900 units sold in 2024. This also contrasts sharply with Elon Musk's earlier projections of selling up to half a million units annually.
The Cybertruck's challenges extend beyond sales numbers. The vehicle has faced criticism regarding its design and build quality. Initial promises of an affordable price point of around $40,000 were unmet, with the first models selling for at least $100,000. A stripped-down version was later introduced at $70,000, but it appears to have failed to boost sales.
Furthermore, the Cybertruck has been subject to multiple recalls due to issues such as accelerator pedal malfunctions, power loss, and body panel detachment. Reports of vehicles being rendered inoperable after car washes and difficulties with off-roading have further fueled criticism.
In the competitive EV truck market, the Cybertruck is facing stiff competition. The GMC EV Hummer saw a 53.9 percent increase in sales in the second quarter, matching the Cybertruck's sales numbers. The Chevrolet Silverado is also trending upward, while the Ford F-150 Lightning experienced a sales decrease. The Rivian R1T, however, is also struggling, with sales figures significantly lower than the Cybertruck.
BNN's Perspective: The Cybertruck's struggles highlight the challenges of bringing a highly anticipated, unconventional vehicle to market. While the initial hype was significant, the vehicle's performance, build quality issues, and pricing have clearly impacted consumer confidence. Tesla needs to address these concerns to regain market share in the increasingly competitive EV truck segment.
