COVID-19 infection flies through the ceiling with 3,016 cases reported in last 24 hrs
The daily positivity rate of the national capital has soared to 13.89 per cent, whereas countrywide it stands at 2.73 per cent. The weekly positivity in India due to COVID-19 infections has risen to 1.71 per cent from an earlier 1.53 per cent.

New Delhi: India recorded 3,016 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. Experts are saying that the Omicrons new descendent, XBB.1.16, is behind the latest surge in cases. With the national capital under siege, the government of the NCT of Delhi has rushed to call for an emergency meeting today.
The daily positivity rate in the capital has soared to 13.89 per cent whereas countrywide it stands at 2.73 per cent. The weekly positivity in India has risen to 1.71 per cent from an earlier 1.53 per cent.
According to the bulletin issued by the citys health department, in contrast with 2,160 samples collected in the past one day, 300 patients were detected as having the SARS-CoV-2 infection. The active case load due to COVID-19 infections in the country stands at 13,509, out of which Delhi accounts for 806 cases.
The other states in India are also seeing a rise in the number of infections due to coronavirus. Among the states, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra have reported a high weekly positivity rate in par with the national average as of March 24, 2023.
Experts point out that the Indian population is not very enthusiastic about taking booster doses. Recently, the Union Health Secretary, in a high-level meeting with officials from several states, talked about the need to enhance the penetration of precautionary doses among the people.
India has so far administered 220.65 crore total vaccine doses (95.20 crore second doses and 22.86 crore precaution doses) of the COVID-19 vaccine as part of the immunisation campaign. The Union Health Ministry informed that 15,784 Indians have opted for vaccination in the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, states across the country are gearing up for COVID-19 related mock drills to assess their preparedness. Public and private health facilities in all districts were urged to participate in the exercise to determine the availability of medications, hospital beds, medical equipment, and medical oxygen in a joint advisory released by the Union Health Ministry and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
1,396 recoveries have been recorded in the last twenty-four hours, bringing the total recoveries since the outbreak of the pandemic to 4,41,68,321. The Union Health Ministry also reported that the number of active cases is currently 0.03 percent of total infections and that the national COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 98.78 per cent.
A total of 92.14 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far, including 1,10,522 tests in the last 24 hours. The highest number of COVID cases caused due to XBB.1.16 variant have been found in Maharashtra and Gujarat, at 164 each, followed by 93 in Telangana and 86 in Karnataka.
