New Delhi: In the midst of the COVID surge, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan chaired a high-level meeting with senior government officials to take stock of the situation and reiterated to the states to ramp up testing with a greater focus on the genome sequencing of the positive samples.
The COVID-19 active case trajectory is consistently rising, with India recording 1,573 positive cases, amounting to SARS-CoV-2 infections. As the active case load approaches the 11,000-plus mark, the total number of active infection cases stands at 10,981.
The grip of the latest XBB.1.16 is getting intensified. During the meeting, it was reported that 24 districts in India are witnessing more than 10 per cent weekly positivity ending March 24, 2023, a 3.5-fold increase from March 14. Whereas the number of districts with weekly positivity between 5-10 per has also risen, from 15 to 43 in the same time period.
The daily positivity rate is 1.30 per cent and the weekly positivity rate is pegged at 1.47 per cent. The states with a high positivity rate for the week ending on March 24, included Himachal Pradesh (7.48 percent from 1.92 per cent on March 03), Maharashtra (4.58 per cent from 0.54), Kerala (4.51 per cent from 1.47), Gujarat (2.17 per cent from 0.07), and Delhi (4.25 per cent from 0.53).
The Union Health Secretary also stressed the need to enhance the penetration of precautionary doses among the population. India has so far administered 220.65 crore total vaccine doses (95.20 crore second doses and 22.86 crore precaution doses) of the COVID-19 vaccine as part of the immunisation campaign. In the last 24 hours, 11,339 doses of vaccines were administered.
The Union Health Ministry reported that the number of active cases is currently 0.02 percent of total infections and that the national COVID-19 recovery rate stands at 98.79 per cent. 888 recoveries have been recorded in the last twenty-four hours, taking the total recoveries since the outbreak of the pandemic to 4,41,65,703.
While directing states and union territories to gear up for mock drills on April 10 and 11, 2023, Bhushan spelled out the status of the last mock drill conducted on December 27, 2022, in the aftermath of the Omicron scare.
"The drills were conducted in a total of 21,939 facilities, including 16,601 government facilities and 5,338 private facilities. Over 94 per cent of PSA plants and oxygen concentrators were found functional across the country, while over 87 per cent of ICU beds, ventilators, O2 beds, and isolation beds were found in working condition," Health Secretary Bhushan informed the meeting.
Indias most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, is all set to initiate the mock drills. Amidst 42 out of 75 districts coming under the grip of COVID, the Chief Minister of State, Yogi Adityanath, while reviewing the situation on Monday, asked for an increase in testing in view of vigilance and security. Adityanath informed that 35 to 40 per cent of the tests in the country is being carried out in UP. A total of 92.11 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted so far, including 1,20,958 tests in the last 24 hours.
