Costco Recalls Meatloaf Meal Kit Due to Salmonella Concerns

Costco is issuing a recall for its popular Meatloaf with Mashed Yukon Potatoes and Glaze meal kit due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall stems from an ingredient supplied by Griffith Foods Inc., which has announced its own recall of the ingredient used in the meal kit.

The recall affects meal kits with "sell-by" dates ranging from March 5th to March 16th. These kits were available at Costco locations across 26 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.

Costco is urging customers who purchased the affected meal kits to refrain from consuming them. Customers are advised to return the product to Costco for a full refund. The company has stated that no illnesses related to the meal kit have been reported at this time.

Salmonella infection can cause a range of symptoms, including diarrhea, stomach cramps, headache, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms typically appear within six hours to six days after infection and usually last for four to seven days. While most individuals recover without treatment, infections can be more severe in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, potentially requiring hospitalization.

Costco has expressed its apologies for any inconvenience the recall may cause.

BNN's Perspective:

This recall highlights the importance of rigorous food safety protocols throughout the supply chain. While it's reassuring that no illnesses have been reported, the potential for salmonella contamination underscores the need for vigilance from both suppliers and retailers. Costco's swift action in issuing the recall and offering refunds demonstrates a commitment to consumer safety, which is crucial for maintaining public trust.
