Columbia University Faculty Accused of Anti-Semitic Behavior

A recently released report details allegations of anti-Semitic behavior by faculty members at Columbia University. The task force, which conducted the investigation, found that instructors singled out Jewish and Israeli students for personal attacks and criticism, violating federal guidelines.

The report highlights several specific incidents. One instructor questioned an Israeli student about settler colonialism, while another labeled an Israeli student an "occupier." An Israeli veteran of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was publicly accused of being a "murderer" by an instructor. A Jewish, non-Israeli student was told it was a "shame" their people survived to commit "mass genocide."

The report also details instances of instructors promoting anti-Israel sentiment in various courses. In a required public health course, a teacher accused Jewish donors of "laundering blood money" and referred to Israel as "so-called Israel." Some instructors encouraged students to attend anti-Israel protests, canceled classes for the protests, and even held classes within the protest encampment.

Furthermore, the task force found that instructors frequently introduced discussions about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in unrelated courses. An astronomy class began with a discussion of the "genocide" in Gaza, and an Arabic class taught students that the "Zionist lobby" supports Joe Biden. One instructor dismissed reports of sexual violence by Hamas as exaggerated or fabricated.

The report also revealed that instructors shared private student communications in class and that anti-Zionist content was integrated into courses across various disciplines. Graduate students were encouraged to "teach for Palestine," regardless of subject matter.

BNN's Perspective:

The allegations against Columbia University faculty are deeply concerning. While academic freedom is crucial, it should not be used as a shield for promoting hate speech or creating a hostile environment for students. Universities have a responsibility to foster an inclusive environment where all students feel safe and respected. This report raises serious questions about whether Columbia University is fulfilling that responsibility. It is essential that the university takes these findings seriously and implements measures to address the issues raised.
