Chris Brown Charged with Grievous Bodily Harm, Faces Prison Time

R&B superstar Chris Brown is facing up to five years in prison after being charged with grievous bodily harm following an alleged assault at a London nightclub. The singer, 36, was arrested Thursday morning at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester and appeared in Manchester Magistrates' Court today.

The charges stem from an incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, on February 19, 2023, where Brown is accused of attacking music producer Abe Diaw. The court heard that Brown allegedly struck Diaw "several times" with a bottle before chasing him and then punching and kicking him, along with another individual. The alleged assault was reportedly captured on CCTV.

Brown, who confirmed his name, date of birth, and address as the Lowry Hotel during the hearing, has been remanded into custody. He is scheduled to next appear at Southwark Crown Court on June 13.

The arrest and charges cast a shadow over Brown's upcoming 20-year anniversary tour. The UK and Irish leg of the tour is set to begin in Manchester on June 15, with dates scheduled across the UK and Ireland, as well as in Paris and Portimao. The tour is then scheduled to resume in North America on July 30. However, the ongoing legal proceedings in the UK could jeopardize these plans.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Brown. Adele Kelly, the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London North, emphasized the importance of avoiding any reporting or commentary that could prejudice the ongoing legal proceedings.
