Chris Anne Affleck, Mother of Oscar Winners Ben and Casey Affleck, Dies at 83

Chris Anne Affleck, the mother of acclaimed actors Ben and Casey Affleck, passed away on June 2 at the age of 83. Her family announced that her death followed a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born Christine Anne Boldt in December 1942, Affleck was a graduate of Harvard University. She dedicated 35 years of her career to public education, retiring in 2008. Throughout her life, she was a staunch advocate for civil rights, notably participating as one of the original Freedom Riders who traveled into the Deep South during the 1960s.

Affleck was the mother of two sons, Ben and Casey, both of whom have achieved Oscar-winning success in their acting careers. Ben Affleck, a two-time Academy Award winner, was born in 1972, and his brother Casey, also an Oscar recipient, was born in 1975. The family relocated to Massachusetts around the time of Casey's birth, where Chris Anne continued her teaching career.

Ben Affleck has spoken about his mother's influence, describing her as a public school teacher who earned a master's degree from Harvard and taught fifth and sixth grade. He contrasted her educational background with his father's working-class lifestyle. The parents divorced when Ben was 12.

During Ben's adolescence, his mother played a role in his early entry into the entertainment industry. She connected him with a former Harvard roommate, casting director Patty Collins, who facilitated his auditions for commercials and television movies. Chris Anne Affleck was a consistent supporter of her son's career, even attending the 1998 Academy Awards ceremony with him and Matt Damon, who also brought his mother. This was the year Ben Affleck and Matt Damon won their first Oscars.

In December 2025, Affleck was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given an estimated six months to live. Her primary wish following her diagnosis was to witness her grandson's high school graduation. She was able to attend this event with her family on May 31, passing away peacefully in her sleep two days later.

Chris Anne Affleck is survived by her sons, Ben and Casey, and her five grandchildren: Indiana, Violet, Atticus, Fin, and Sam.

BNN's Perspective: The passing of Chris Anne Affleck marks the end of a life characterized by dedication to education and a commitment to social justice. Her involvement as a Freedom Rider highlights a courageous spirit and a deep-seated belief in equality. Her support for her sons' burgeoning careers, even in their earliest stages, underscores the profound impact a parent can have on their children's aspirations. Her final wish being fulfilled, to see her grandson graduate, offers a poignant reminder of the enduring importance of family milestones.
