Cavs Shake Up Roster, Trade Hunter to Kings
Cleveland Cavaliers are making moves ahead of the NBA trade deadline, according to reports. The team has agreed to trade DeAndre Hunter to the Sacramento Kings. In return, the Cavaliers will receive Dennis Schroder and Keon Ellis. This is part of a three-team deal that also involves the Chicago Bulls, who will receive Dario Saric from the Kings and two future second-round draft picks.
Hunter, acquired by the Cavaliers in February 2025, was intended to address the team's small forward position. However, the move didn't pan out as expected, leading to this trade.
The deal could help the Cavaliers manage their financial situation, potentially bringing them under the second apron next season. Ellis is on an expiring contract, and the Cavaliers already face several roster decisions.
The 2-for-1 trade has filled all 15 of Cleveland's roster spots. The team may need to make further moves if they want to convert NaeQwan Tomlin from his two-way contract. Lonzo Ball is a likely candidate to be moved, as the team could look to shed his $10 million contract. Buyouts for players like Larry Nance Jr. and Thomas Bryant could also open a spot for Tomlin.
The additions of Schroder and Ellis provide the Cavaliers with added depth, particularly in ball-handling, as Darius Garland recovers from a toe injury. Max Strus has yet to play this season due to a foot injury, and Craig Porter Jr. is dealing with knee soreness.
Schroder, a veteran player, has played in 40 games this season, averaging 12.8 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game. He was also named the 2025 EuroBasket MVP. Ellis is averaging 5.6 points, 0.6 assists, and 1.3 rebounds per game. He is one of two players in the NBA averaging 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per 36 minutes this season.
BNN's Perspective:
This trade appears to be a calculated move by the Cavaliers, addressing both immediate needs and long-term financial considerations. While Hunter didn't work out as planned, the acquisition of Schroder and Ellis provides valuable depth and experience, especially with key players dealing with injuries. The Cavaliers seem to be positioning themselves for both present success and future flexibility.
