Hurricanes Reassign Bayreuther, Gostisbehere Returns
RALEIGH, NC - The Carolina Hurricanes have reassigned defenseman Gavin Bayreuther to the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves. The move was announced shortly before a recent game.
Bayreuther was previously recalled by the Hurricanes on December 29th, a corresponding move to placing goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov on the injured reserve. This marked Bayreuther's second call-up to the NHL roster this season. However, he has yet to play a game for the Hurricanes. His last NHL experience was during the 2022-23 season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he recorded two goals and 14 points in 51 games.
Following the 2023-24 season with the AHL's Texas Stars, Bayreuther played overseas, signing with Lausanne HC in the National League. He had a productive season, scoring five goals and 23 points in 52 games. He returned to North America last summer and has since registered four goals and 13 points in 24 games with the Wolves.
Bayreuther's reassignment coincides with the return of defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere to the Hurricanes lineup. Gostisbehere had been sidelined for the previous three games due to injury. He has been a key player for the Hurricanes this season, scoring four goals and 29 points in 28 games. He joins Zach Werenski and Cale Makar as the only defensemen averaging over a point per game this season.
BNN's Perspective: This move highlights the competitive nature of the NHL and the constant adjustments teams must make due to injuries and player performance. While Bayreuther's reassignment is unfortunate for him, it allows Gostisbehere, a proven contributor, to return to the lineup and bolster the Hurricanes' defensive core. It's a reminder that professional sports often involve tough decisions and the need for players to be ready for opportunities when they arise.
