Can Micron Technology Become the New Nvidia?

Micron Technology is experiencing a remarkable surge in its stock performance, with gains of approximately 240% year-to-date. This impressive run, which briefly touched 300% before a recent market adjustment in AI-centric stocks, is fueled by robust demand for memory chips and optimistic future projections. The company recently reported a strong financial quarter and anticipates continued growth, with indications that tight market conditions for memory chips could persist until 2028. This sustained shortage, coupled with escalating demand, positions Micron for significant potential upside, drawing comparisons to the success of Nvidia.
The core of Micron's business lies in the fabrication of both NAND and DRAM memory. NAND is utilized for long-term data storage, such as in solid-state drives, while DRAM provides the high-speed memory essential for processing intensive tasks, a critical component for graphics processing units like those manufactured by Nvidia. The current boom in data center construction has created an unprecedented demand for both types of memory, outstripping supply and driving up chip prices, which directly benefits Micron. With new manufacturing capacity not expected to come online until 2027 or later, the low inventory situation is projected to continue for at least the next eighteen months, potentially leading to further price increases as demand shows no signs of abating.
The artificial intelligence sector is a major driver of this demand. Hyperscale cloud providers are planning substantial investments in data center infrastructure, with projected capital expenditures exceeding $1 trillion next year. This massive investment will inevitably translate into heightened demand for both memory chips and advanced GPUs. Micron's recent financial results show DRAM accounting for a significant portion of its sales, approximately 76%. For Micron to truly rival Nvidia, a substantial acceleration in its NAND sales growth would be necessary, as DRAM is expected to grow in line with GPU demand.
While the author does not foresee Micron surpassing Nvidia, the company is still viewed as a compelling investment. Micron's projected revenue for the upcoming quarter is an impressive $50 billion, half of Nvidia's expected generation. This suggests Micron is steadily climbing the ranks. The cyclical nature of the memory chip market often complicates valuation. However, applying a range of earnings multiples to projected fiscal year 2027 earnings per share suggests a potential market capitalization for Micron between $2.5 trillion and $4.2 trillion. Under optimistic scenarios, where earnings reach the higher end of projections and a 25x earnings multiple is applied, Micron's valuation could even exceed Nvidia's current market capitalization. It is important to note that any significant rise in Micron's stock would likely be accompanied by a corresponding increase in Nvidia's valuation, as both companies benefit from similar market tailwinds.
BNN's Perspective: The analysis highlights a dynamic market where technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence, are creating substantial opportunities for companies like Micron. While the prospect of Micron directly overtaking Nvidia in market capitalization appears challenging, the company's strong performance and projected growth underscore its significant potential as an investment. The current supply-demand imbalance in the memory chip market, coupled with massive data center investments, creates a favorable environment for Micron to continue its upward trajectory. Investors are likely to find value in Micron's ability to capitalize on these trends, even if it doesn't achieve the same market dominance as Nvidia.
