Campbell Dominates Kapolei to Win OIA Division I Softball Championship

In a stunning display of offensive power, Campbell High School secured the OIA Division I softball championship, defeating Kapolei High School with a decisive 19-1 victory. The game, which concluded in five innings, saw Campbell's Dalexy Sanchez lead the charge with two home runs, including a grand slam in the first inning. Sophomore pitcher Lily Perreira delivered a strong performance on the mound, limiting Kapolei to just four hits while striking out one batter.

Campbell's victory marks a significant achievement, especially considering the team's recent struggles to find consistency. According to Sanchez, the team focused on unity and trust during the postseason, adopting a mindset of starting fresh with each game. This championship win is also the first for first-year head coach Katie Epenesa, who celebrated with a Gatorade shower after the game.

Kapolei coach Enson Queypo acknowledged Campbell's dominance, praising their hitting prowess. Despite the loss, Queypo expressed pride in his team's performance, emphasizing the valuable experience gained throughout the season. Kapolei had a strong run, reaching the championship game, and Queypo believes this experience will benefit the team in the future.

Campbell's path to the championship included a semifinal victory over two-time defending OIA and state champion Mililani. The Lady Sabers had previously faced Kapolei in preseason tournaments and OIA West play, with Kapolei returning the favor with a win earlier in the season. The DataHouse/HHSAA Softball State Championships are set to begin on May 6, giving teams time to prepare.

BNN's Perspective:

While Campbell's dominant performance is impressive, it's important to recognize the competitive spirit of Kapolei, who had a strong season. The focus on teamwork and trust by Campbell is a positive sign for the future of high school sports.
