Campbell Girls Advance to OIA Championship
The Campbell High School girls' soccer team secured a decisive victory over Pearl City in the semifinals of the OIA Girls Division I Soccer Tournament on Thursday, earning a spot in the championship match. The Sabers dominated the game, ultimately winning 3-0.
Cheyleeana Alcosiba-Bacalso put Campbell on the scoreboard early with a remarkable long-range goal, striking the ball from 40 yards out. Laila Lim extended the lead early in the second half with a header off a corner kick. Nashalia Kane added a third goal late in the game, solidifying Campbell's win.
Coach James Curran praised the team's performance, emphasizing their discipline and focus throughout the match. He highlighted the importance of staying alert and continuing to score.
Campbell, the West's top seed, will now face Kaiser in the championship game on Saturday. This marks the Sabers' opportunity to claim their fourth OIA title, with previous victories in 2007, 2015, and now 2024. The team's success is particularly notable given the contributions of players recently promoted from the junior varsity team, including Alcosiba-Bacalso.
Pearl City, the West's No. 3 seed, will compete against Mililani for third place. The OIA will be represented at the Hele/HHSAA Girls D-I Soccer Championships by Campbell, Mililani, Kaiser, Pearl City, Kalani, and Kahuku, which begin on January 26th.
BNN's Perspective:
The Campbell girls' performance demonstrates the importance of teamwork, strategic coaching, and individual skill. While the team's success is commendable, it's also a reminder of the need for continued investment in youth sports programs to foster talent and provide opportunities for young athletes.
