Man Killed in Hit-and-Run on Broadway Street in Houston

Houston, TX - A pedestrian was fatally struck by a black SUV in a crosswalk on Broadway Street in Houston's South Loop area last night. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene following the collision.

According to Houston Police, the incident occurred in the 2900 block of Broadway Street. The victim was walking in a marked crosswalk when the southbound SUV failed to yield and struck him. The SUV then continued south on Broadway.

Officers closed Broadway in both directions while investigators from the Eastside Division and the Vehicular Crimes Division examined the crash site. Authorities are currently reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and churches in an effort to identify the vehicle and its driver.

Police are actively seeking witnesses and any video evidence related to the crash. The Houston Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted to the HPD Hit-and-Run Unit or to Crime Stoppers.

Under Texas law, leaving the scene of a fatal crash is a second-degree felony, potentially carrying a prison sentence of two to 20 years.

This section of Broadway has a history of serious accidents. A previous high-speed collision in November resulted in two fatalities, with the suspects also fleeing the scene. The Houston Police Department has conducted multiple investigations into serious collisions along this corridor.

The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of family members. No arrests have been made as of late Friday. Police have stated that additional information will be released as leads develop and evidence is processed.

BNN's Perspective: This tragic incident highlights the critical need for increased road safety measures, particularly in areas with a history of accidents. While the investigation is ongoing, the severity of the potential penalties for the driver underscores the importance of accountability in such cases. The city should consider a review of traffic safety protocols on Broadway to prevent future tragedies.
