Brazil Travel Advisory: Increased Caution Advised
The US Department of State has updated its travel advisory for Brazil, placing the country at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. This advisory, issued in August 2025, advises travelers to be aware of heightened risks, including violent crime and kidnapping. The advisory specifically highlights concerns in major cities like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasilia, as well as border zones.
The update follows recent incidents, including a kidnapping for ransom involving US citizens. The advisory warns of armed robbery, carjacking, and street assaults, which can occur day or night. Tourists are urged to avoid displaying valuables and to use secure transport. The advisory also cautions against using municipal buses due to the risk of robbery and assault.
The US government has identified specific areas to avoid, including areas within 160 kilometers of Brazil's borders with several neighboring countries. Informal housing settlements, known as favelas, are also considered high-risk zones.
The advisory does not mean travelers should avoid Brazil entirely, but it does emphasize the need for increased vigilance. The Department of State recommends that travelers register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and stay informed about local conditions.
BNN's Perspective: While the advisory is concerning, Brazil remains a popular destination. Travelers should be aware of the risks and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
