Bill Maher has criticized Hollywood celebrities for their display of activism at the Golden Globes, specifically targeting those who wore anti-ICE pins. During his "New Rules" segment on HBO's "Real Time," Maher expressed his disapproval of what he called "poser" behavior, arguing that wearing a pin doesn't equate to meaningful action. He stated that the incident involving ICE agent Jonathan Ross and the shooting of Renee Good was horrific, but he didn't feel the need to wear a pin to express that sentiment.
Maher addressed the backlash he received, sharing that he stood by his original comments. He also humorously mocked the perceived activism, suggesting it was merely a performative act. He argued that celebrities jumping from cause to cause and wearing pins did nothing to solve the problems they aimed to fix. Maher then suggested that celebrities should stay out of politics, claiming their involvement was counterproductive, citing examples like Kamala Harris's loss in swing states despite endorsements from high-profile figures. He pointed out that celebrities, due to their wealth and lifestyle, are often unrelatable to the average person.
Maher also reignited his feud with Dave Chappelle, disagreeing with Chappelle's view that it's easier to speak freely in Saudi Arabia than in America. Maher then advised the Democratic Party to distance itself from its embrace of celebrity endorsements, arguing that it made the party appear out of touch. He concluded by stating that the celebrities' actions were inadvertently driving independent voters towards the Republican Party. Several celebrities, including Ariana Grande, Mark Ruffalo, Natasha Lyonne, and Jean Smart, wore the anti-ICE pins at the awards show. Host Wanda Sykes also wore the pin and mocked Maher during the show.
BNN's Perspective: Maher's critique, while perhaps delivered with his signature bluntness, raises a valid point about the effectiveness of performative activism. While supporting causes is important, it's worth considering whether symbolic gestures alone truly create change or if they risk alienating those outside of the Hollywood bubble.
