Cape Cod Potato Chips Factory in Hyannis to Close After 40 Years

Hyannis, Massachusetts – The iconic Cape Cod Potato Chips factory in Hyannis is set to close its doors in April, ending a four-decade run of producing the beloved snack. The announcement, made by Campbell Soup Company, the parent company of Cape Cod Potato Chips, cited a need to strengthen operations and position its snacks business for long-term growth.

The Hyannis plant, which also produces Kettle Brand chips, currently accounts for only 4% of the total annual volume of Cape Cod Potato Chips. The company stated that this low production volume made the facility no longer economically viable. The closure will affect 49 employees, who will receive separation benefits and job placement support.

Cape Cod Potato Chips was founded on July 4, 1980, by brothers Steve and Jude Bernard. The company expanded its production to the current Hyannis plant in 1985. The brand has changed hands over the years, with Lance acquiring it in 1999 and Campbell Soup Company acquiring Snyder's-Lance Inc. in 2018. As the brand grew, production expanded to other locations across the country.

Campbell Soup Company plans to sell the Hyannis facility after its closure. The company also stated its commitment to the community, promising continued investment through culinary entrepreneurship programs, workforce development, and career pathways aligned with the region's hospitality needs. Cape Cod will also remain eligible for community impact grants through The Campbell's Foundation.

BNN's Perspective: While the closure of the Hyannis factory is undoubtedly a loss for the local community and a nostalgic blow for many, the decision reflects the realities of a competitive market. The company's commitment to supporting its employees and investing in the community is a positive step. The focus on streamlining operations and maintaining production of the popular Cape Cod Potato Chips at other facilities suggests a strategic move to ensure the brand's continued success.
