Local Teens to Showcase 10-Minute Musicals in Medina

MEDINA, Ohio – Buckeye Community Theatre (BCT) is partnering with local teens to present a series of 10-minute musicals, offering a vibrant performance to combat the winter doldrums. The production, titled "BCT Unplugged," will feature a collection of short musicals, interwoven with songs and monologues performed by the young cast.

Tyler Martin, the executive director of the performance, explained that the show is structured as a revue or cabaret, combining three distinct 10-minute musicals. The transitions between these segments will be filled by the teen performers, showcasing their individual talents through songs and monologues. The entire performance is approximately 50 minutes long.

The project was initiated by Kim, the artistic director at Buckeye Community Theatre, who reached out to Martin last summer with the concept. The goal was to create a performance opportunity specifically for performers aged 14 to 18.

The cast, comprised of experienced area teens, underwent an accelerated rehearsal schedule, meeting only on Sundays. Martin highlighted that this format provided valuable professional training, emphasizing the importance of independent learning and individual expression.

Performances are scheduled for January 9th at 7 p.m. and January 10th at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at bctohio.org. The matinee performance on January 10th will be a "pay what you can" event, with tickets available at the door starting at 1:30 p.m.

Martin expressed optimism about the future of this program, viewing this production as a pilot project. He anticipates that BCT will assess the program's success and make adjustments for future performances.

BNN's Perspective: This initiative by Buckeye Community Theatre is a commendable effort to provide young performers with valuable experience and a platform to showcase their talents. The "pay what you can" matinee performance is particularly noteworthy, making the arts accessible to a wider audience. The project's focus on independent learning and individual expression is a positive step in fostering the next generation of performers.
