The 2026 Indianapolis 500: A Spectacle of Speed and Tradition

The 110th running of the Indianapolis 500, often called "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," is set to take place this weekend. The race will be broadcast on FOX, with pre-race coverage beginning at 10 a.m. ET on Sunday, May 24, followed by the race itself at approximately 12:45 p.m. ET. The event will be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The race covers 500 miles, consisting of 200 laps around the 2.5-mile oval track. The reigning champion, Alex Palou, won the pole position during qualifying. He will be joined on the front row by Alexander Rossi, with David Malukas starting in third. Palou, the 2025 Indy 500 winner, is the first defending champion to win the pole the following year since 2010.

The Borg-Warner Trophy, awarded to the winner, is a symbol of the race's prestige. The trophy is valued at $3.5 million, stands over five feet tall, and features the sculpted faces and engraved names of every winner since 1911.

The field includes nine previous Indy 500 winners, including multi-time champions like Josef Newgarden and Hélio Castroneves. Four rookie drivers will also be competing.

The event is more than just a race; it's a weekend-long celebration. Festivities include concerts, the Oscar Mayer Wienie 500, and the Indy 500 Pit Stop Challenge. The race is steeped in tradition, from the winner's kiss of the bricks on the track to the celebratory dousing with milk. The national anthem will be performed by Jordin Sparks, and Jim Cornelison will sing "Back Home Again in Indiana." The race will also feature a performance by DJ Zedd.

BNN's Perspective: The Indianapolis 500 continues to be a significant sporting event, blending high-speed competition with cherished traditions. The race's enduring popularity speaks to its ability to captivate audiences with both the thrill of racing and the rich history that surrounds it.
