Legislation Introduced to Designate Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorist Organization

Representative Nancy Mace has introduced legislation to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization. The proposed "Muslim Brotherhood Is a Terrorist Organization Act" calls for the Secretary of State to officially list the group as such, enabling financial sanctions, asset freezes, travel bans, and law enforcement actions to dismantle its operations. Senator Ted Cruz has expressed support for the bill, citing the group's use of political violence and its connection to Hamas, which committed a large-scale massacre of Jews on October 7th.

The legislation comes in response to concerns about the Brotherhood's influence and its alleged role in inspiring violence, including an attack on a pro-Israel gathering in Boulder, Colorado, in June 2025. The attacker, who expressed support for the Brotherhood, injured fifteen people and killed one.

The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, has been linked to the modern age of terrorism. The group's ideology, rooted in a strict interpretation of Islamic teachings, has spread across borders and cultures. The Brotherhood's influence has been felt in various conflicts and has been linked to antisemitism. Some countries, including Jordan, have already designated the group as a terrorist organization.

Previous attempts to designate the Brotherhood as a terrorist organization have faced criticism, with some arguing that the group doesn't fit the definition of a terrorist organization.

BNN's Perspective: While the debate over designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization is complex, the evidence presented suggests a clear pattern of violence and extremism associated with the group. Given the potential threat to global security, a thorough review of the evidence is warranted.
