Australia to Tighten Gun Laws Following Bondi Beach Attack

SYDNEY - Australian leaders have pledged immediate action to strengthen gun control laws in response to a mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach. The attack, which resulted in at least 15 fatalities, has sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for measures to combat rising antisemitism.

Proposed changes include limiting the number of firearms an individual can own and a review of existing gun licenses. These measures would represent a significant update to the national firearms agreement, which was implemented after a 1996 mass shooting in Tasmania. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has emphasized the government's commitment to taking all necessary actions, including tougher gun laws.

The violence unfolded at the end of a summer day, targeting a Chanukah by the Sea event. The Prime Minister has labeled the attack an act of antisemitic terrorism.

Police fatally shot one of the suspected gunmen, a 50-year-old father, at the scene. His 24-year-old son remained hospitalized in a coma. Authorities have not released their names. As of Tuesday, 25 people were still receiving treatment in hospitals, with 10 in critical condition, including children.

One individual, identified as Ahmed al Ahmed, was captured on video appearing to disarm one of the assailants. Al Ahmed, a 42-year-old fruit shop owner and father of two, was shot in the shoulder. He is an Australian citizen who migrated from Syria in 2006. His family has stated that he has a background in the Syrian security forces.

Authorities have confirmed that the Australian Security Intelligence Organization investigated the younger suspected gunman in 2019. The investigation focused on his associations, specifically ties to a Sydney-based Islamic State group cell. The Prime Minister stated that the agency was interested in the associates rather than the son, and that the assessment was that there was no indication of any ongoing threat.
