101-Year-Old WWII Veteran Releases Song, "If Freedom Was Free"

NASHVILLE - Irving Locker, a World War II veteran, has achieved a remarkable new milestone: becoming a published songwriter at the age of 101. The song, titled "If Freedom Was Free," was released last week by Big Machine Label Group and CreatiVets, a Nashville-based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping veterans heal through artistic expression.

Locker, who landed on Utah Beach on D-Day, collaborated with singer-songwriter Bart Crow and the duo Johnny and Heidi Bulford on the track. The song's chorus, "If freedom was free, there wouldn't be a mountain of metal and men under Normandy," echoes a message Locker has shared in lectures throughout his life, including at the White House. He emphasizes the importance of appreciating freedom and honoring those who sacrificed their lives to secure it.

Locker expressed his excitement about the opportunity to write a song, calling it an "unbelievable thrill." Music has always been a significant part of his life, and he and his wife of 77 years, Bernice, continue to enjoy dancing, including the jitterbug and cha-cha. Locker acknowledges his good fortune to be alive and active, especially considering the experiences of many other veterans. He also shared that his wartime experiences led him to a deeper appreciation for faith.

BNN's Perspective:

This story is a heartwarming reminder of the enduring spirit of veterans and the power of art to heal and connect. Locker's dedication to sharing his experiences and his continued zest for life are truly inspiring. It's a testament to the importance of supporting veterans and providing them with opportunities to express themselves and find new purpose. The collaboration between CreatiVets and the music industry is a positive example of how different sectors can work together to make a difference.
