Angel City Defender Savy King Recovering After Heart Surgery Following On-Field Collapse

Angel City FC defender Savy King is recovering from heart surgery after collapsing during a National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) match on Friday night. The 20-year-old player went down in the 74th minute of the game against the Utah Royals and was immediately attended to by medical staff.

King was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where doctors discovered a heart abnormality. She underwent surgery on Tuesday and is now resting and recovering, with her prognosis described as excellent by the team.

The incident deeply affected players on both teams, who were visibly shaken. The NWSL has stated it will review its policies to determine if any changes are needed. The league's rules for 2025 already address emergencies that could make a game inadvisable or dangerous.

King's family released a joint statement expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support from Angel City players, staff, fans, and the wider soccer community. They also thanked the medical staff for their care. King's family is looking forward to having her home soon.

King, the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NWSL draft, was traded to Angel City in February and had started in all eight games for the team this season. The match, which saw 12 minutes of stoppage time added, ended with Angel City winning 2-0.
