Angel City Football Club defender Savy King, 20, is recovering well after undergoing successful heart surgery on Tuesday. The surgery addressed a heart abnormality discovered following King's collapse during Friday night's match against the Utah Royals.

King collapsed in the second half of the game and received immediate medical attention from the Angel City training and medical staff. She was initially treated at California Hospital Medical Center before being admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Saturday morning. The club announced that King is resting and recovering with her family, and her prognosis is excellent.

The incident prompted a discussion about the continuation of the game. While Angel City went on to win 2-0, Utah Royals coach Jimmy Coenraets expressed concerns about the emotional impact on players and questioned the decision to continue. The NWSL confirmed that league protocols were followed. The 2025 Competition Rules state that the league office makes the decision to continue a game in emergency situations, including serious medical concerns.

King's family has expressed their gratitude for the medical care and outpouring of support from the soccer community. King, a former No. 2 pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft, was traded to Angel City during the offseason. She played 18 games last season with Bay FC and eight so far this season for Angel City. Angel City resumes its NWSL schedule on Saturday with a road game against Bay FC.
