Amazon Announces Further Corporate Job Cuts
Amazon has announced plans to eliminate 14,000 corporate jobs as part of a strategic restructuring aimed at streamlining operations and investing in its artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. This marks the second significant round of job cuts for the e-commerce giant in recent years, following a reduction of 22,000 positions in 2022.
The company, which employed nearly 1.2 million people as of late October 2024, with over 360,000 in corporate roles, cited the need to adapt to a rapidly changing technological landscape. In a memo to employees, Beth Galetti, Amazon's senior vice president of people experience and technology, emphasized the transformative potential of AI and the company's commitment to leveraging it. The goal is to become more efficient and agile, enabling faster innovation and better service for customers.
The layoffs are occurring as Amazon invests heavily in its tech infrastructure, particularly to expand its cloud services business, Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company spent $55.6 billion in the first half of its current financial year on tech infrastructure. Despite these investments, Amazon's revenue increased 13% to $167.7 billion in the second quarter compared to the previous year, with AWS contributing significantly to total net sales.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has previously indicated that the company anticipates needing fewer employees in certain roles as it integrates more AI agents into its operations. The company is offering affected employees support, including 90 days to find new roles internally, severance pay, outplacement services, and continued health insurance benefits. Amazon also plans to continue removing layers and realizing efficiency gains while hiring in key areas in 2026.
BNN's Perspective:
While job losses are always concerning, Amazon's strategic shift towards AI and streamlining its operations reflects a broader trend in the tech industry. The company's focus on efficiency and innovation, coupled with its financial performance, suggests a proactive approach to navigating the evolving market. The support offered to departing employees is a positive step, and the company's long-term vision appears to be focused on sustainable growth.
