Amazon-owned Zoox has inaugurated a new manufacturing facility in California, signaling its commitment to the development and deployment of its robotaxi service. The 220,000-square-foot facility is designed to eventually produce over 10,000 robotaxis annually. However, the company has yet to launch commercial operations, and it remains to be seen how quickly the facility will reach its full production capacity.

Zoox, which has been developing self-driving technology since 2014, has been testing its unique, pod-like vehicles – lacking steering wheels and pedals – with employees and select invitees in the Bay Area and Las Vegas. The company has also expanded its testing fleet, which includes Toyota Highlander Hybrids equipped with radar and lidar sensors and operated by safety drivers, to Austin and Miami.

As Zoox prepares for its commercial launch, anticipated later this year, it has faced some challenges. The company issued software updates after testing vehicles were involved in accidents with motorcyclists. Further recalls were conducted following incidents involving a passenger vehicle and a scooter.

Zoox distinguishes itself from competitors by developing a "purpose-built" robotaxi, designed from the ground up without traditional controls. Other companies, such as Waymo and Tesla, are using modified or standard vehicles for their robotaxi services. The absence of steering wheels and pedals presents unique challenges, including the need for emergency responders to familiarize themselves with the vehicles and the potential need for towing in certain situations.

Federal regulators are working to streamline the approval process for vehicles without traditional controls, which could benefit Zoox. The company has self-certified that its robotaxis meet federal safety guidelines.

Zoox's previous assembly facility will now be dedicated to retrofitting its testing fleet and configuring sensor pods. The new facility currently employs approximately 100 people, with plans to expand its workforce across various departments.
