Amazon to End Support for Older Kindle Devices
Amazon is phasing out support for its older Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets, impacting users with devices released in 2012 or earlier. The company has notified some users via email, informing them that starting May 20, 2026, these devices will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content.
While users can continue to read books already downloaded on these older Kindles, the functionality of accessing new content will be lost. Furthermore, performing a factory reset on these devices to resolve any issues will render them unusable. Deregistering the devices will also have the same effect.
The affected models include the original Kindle, Kindle 2, Kindle DX, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, and the first generation Kindle Paperwhite. On Kindle Fire devices, users will lose the ability to purchase or download content, but other services will remain operational.
Amazon stated that these devices have been supported for a significant period, some for as long as 18 years. The company cited advancements in technology as the reason for the discontinuation of support. Amazon estimates that this change will affect approximately 3% of its current user base. To encourage upgrades, Amazon is offering affected users a promo code for 20% off select Kindle devices and ebook credits if they purchase a new model by June 20. The company highlights the improved screen quality, performance, and accessibility of its newer devices, along with continued access to the user's complete Kindle library and the Kindle Store.
BNN's Perspective: While the move to discontinue support for older devices is understandable given the rapid pace of technological advancement, it's a reminder of the planned obsolescence inherent in the tech industry. Amazon is offering incentives to upgrade, which is a positive step. However, users should be aware of the lifespan of their devices and the potential for future support limitations when making purchasing decisions.
