Amazon Expands Same-Day Grocery Delivery to Over 1,000 Cities
Amazon is significantly broadening its same-day delivery service, introducing perishable grocery items to over 1,000 cities across the United States. The expansion, announced on Wednesday, will include dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and frozen foods. The company plans to extend the service to as many as 2,300 cities by the end of 2025.
The e-commerce giant tested the service last year, noting strong customer interest in items like strawberries, bananas, and avocados. Amazon reported that many of these shoppers were new to its grocery services and returned to shop twice as often with same-day delivery compared to those who didn't purchase fresh food.
The service is available to Prime members with free delivery on orders over $25. Non-Prime customers can access the service for a $12.99 fee. Amazon emphasizes its commitment to quality and freshness, highlighting its temperature-controlled fulfillment network and a six-point quality check for each perishable item.
BNN's Perspective:
This move by Amazon reflects the ongoing evolution of online grocery shopping. While the convenience of same-day delivery is appealing, consumers should carefully consider the potential environmental impact of increased transportation and packaging. The success of this expansion will likely depend on Amazon's ability to maintain the quality of perishable goods and offer competitive pricing.
