Alf Clausen, Legendary Composer of The Simpsons, Dies at 84
The world of animation and music mourns the loss of Alf Clausen, the Emmy-winning composer who brought countless iconic moments on *The Simpsons* to life. Clausen passed away at his home in Los Angeles on Thursday at the age of 84, after an eight-year battle with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP).
Clausen's musical genius graced *The Simpsons* from its second season in 1990, starting with the inaugural "Treehouse of Horror" episode, through season 28 in 2017. He was infamously let go in a cost-cutting move, much to the dismay of fans, though he retained the honorary title of Composer Emeritus.
During his tenure, Clausen composed over 10,000 music cues, becoming the "secret weapon" of the show, according to *Simpsons* creator Matt Groening. His work was instrumental in shaping the show's unique comedic and emotional tone. Clausen even initially hesitated to take the job, preferring to work on drama films, but Groening convinced him to create something different from typical cartoon scores.
Before *The Simpsons*, Clausen built a successful career in film and television, working on projects like *Ferris Bueller's Day Off* and the TV series *Moonlighting*, where he earned six of his 30 Emmy nominations. His work on *The Simpsons* earned him over 20 Primetime Emmy nominations, with wins for "We Put The Spring In Springfield" and "You're Checkin' In."
After his departure from the show, the music production company Bleeding Fingers Music took over. Clausen later filed a lawsuit against Fox and *The Simpsons* producers, alleging ageism, which was ultimately settled in 2022. Clausen's legacy lives on through his memorable scores, which were compiled into three albums, including *Songs in the Key of Springfield* and *Go Simpsonic with The Simpsons*.
