Reddit Co-Founder Alexis Ohanian Invests in Chelsea Women's Soccer Team

Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit and husband of tennis superstar Serena Williams, is making a significant investment in women's sports once again. Ohanian has acquired a minority stake in Chelsea Women, the reigning champions of the Women's Super League (WSL).

The investment, announced on X (formerly Twitter), sees Ohanian join the English club as an investor and board member. Reports indicate he's purchased an 8% stake in the team, with his shareholding valued at over £20 million. This deal values Chelsea Women at approximately £245 million, making them the most valuable women's soccer team globally.

This isn't Ohanian's first foray into women's soccer. In 2020, he became the largest shareholder of Angel City FC, a National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) club, before its sale in 2024. His commitment to the sport highlights his belief in its growing potential.

Chelsea Women has a stellar record, having won the WSL title eight times. They've already secured this season's title and the League Cup and are aiming for a domestic treble by winning the FA Cup this weekend. Ohanian, along with Serena Williams and their family, are expected to attend the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Ohanian emphasized that his investment goes beyond winning titles. He aims to provide the team with the resources, visibility, and respect they deserve, recognizing the talent and dedication of the players. The team's ownership transitioned to BlueCo, Todd Boehly's consortium, last June, and they appointed Aki Mandhar as their first dedicated CEO as part of a "repositioning" effort. All of Ohanian's investment will directly benefit the women's team.
