Nursing Home Resident Sexually Assaulted, Man Arrested
Manassas, Virginia – Authorities have arrested a man in connection with the sexual assault of an 89-year-old resident at a local nursing home. Prince William County Police responded to a call at Paramount Senior Living at Manassas on Friday evening after an employee discovered the alleged assault.
According to court documents, an employee conducting room checks found the door to the victim's room closed, which was reportedly unusual. Upon entering, the employee witnessed the aftermath of the assault and found a man, identified as 67-year-old Harold Leon Edwards II, inside the room.
Edwards, who is the son of other residents at the facility, was visiting his family members at the time of the incident, according to an employee's statement to investigators. He has been charged with aggravated sexual battery and object sexual penetration.
The victim, due to her age and physical limitations, was reportedly unable to defend herself. The criminal complaint also states that her mental state prevented her from providing a clear account of the events to the police. Edwards, a resident of Wall Township, New Jersey, is currently being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
BNN's Perspective: This is a deeply disturbing case that highlights the vulnerability of elderly residents in care facilities. While the details are difficult to read, it underscores the importance of robust security measures and thorough background checks for all individuals with access to these vulnerable populations. It also raises questions about the level of oversight and protection provided to residents in nursing homes.
