Christian McCaffrey Named NFL Comeback Player of the Year
San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has been awarded the NFL's Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year. The announcement came during the honors night. McCaffrey's journey back to top form was highlighted after a challenging previous season.
In the prior year, McCaffrey's playing time was significantly limited due to injuries, including bilateral Achilles tendinitis and a PCL strain. He participated in only four games and recorded 348 yards from scrimmage. This season, however, McCaffrey demonstrated remarkable resilience and performance.
Overcoming concerns about his durability, McCaffrey played in all 17 games, achieving a career-high 413 touches. He amassed an impressive 2,126 scrimmage yards, comprising 1,202 rushing yards, 924 receiving yards, and 17 touchdowns. His scrimmage yardage placed him second in the league, trailing only Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson.
McCaffrey's contributions were instrumental in the 49ers' improved performance. The team's record improved from 6-11 to 12-5, securing a wild card berth in the NFL playoffs. McCaffrey also received recognition as a finalist for both the Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year awards. He was also named to the 2025 Associated Press All-Pro team as an all-purpose player.
The Comeback Player of the Year award finalists included Stefon Diggs, Aidan Hutchinson, Trevor Lawrence, and Dak Prescott. The awards are determined by a 50-member media panel using a weighted point system, with voting concluding at the end of the regular season.
BNN's Perspective:
McCaffrey's comeback story is a testament to perseverance and the importance of a strong support system. His performance this season not only revitalized his career but also significantly boosted his team's prospects. While the award is well-deserved, it also highlights the competitive nature of the NFL, where many players face and overcome significant challenges.
