Syringe Attacks Reported at French Music Festival, Sparking Investigation
Paris, France - French authorities are investigating a series of syringe attacks reported during the annual Fête de la Musique, a nationwide music festival held over the weekend. The Interior Ministry announced that at least 145 people reported being pricked with syringes across the country, with at least 13 incidents occurring in Paris.
Twelve suspects have been detained in connection with the attacks. Four of the suspects were apprehended in Angouleme and are believed to be linked to approximately 50 of the reported incidents. The ministry has stated that toxicology tests are underway to determine if the syringes contained any substances, including date-rape drugs.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are taking the matter seriously. Reports of similar incidents emerged in the summer of 2022, prompting government warnings and calls for vigilance.
Feminist influencers have raised concerns that women are being targeted in these attacks. Paris police chief Laurent Nuez condemned online calls to attack women, calling them "idiotic."
Over 370 people were detained during the festival for various offenses. Fourteen festivalgoers sustained serious injuries, although it is unclear if these injuries are related to the syringe incidents.
