South Korean Investors Dump Tesla Stock for Crypto

Seoul, South Korea – A significant shift is underway in the investment landscape of South Korea, as retail investors are rapidly moving away from Tesla stock in favor of cryptocurrencies. Data reveals a substantial outflow from Tesla shares, marking a notable change in investor sentiment.

In August 2025, Tesla experienced a net sale of $657 million in South Korea. This represents the largest monthly outflow from the stock since at least 2019, according to calculations based on Korea Securities Depository data. This marks a stark contrast to the past, where Tesla shares consistently attracted inflows from Korean retail traders, especially during the pandemic-driven surge in U.S. tech stocks. Over the past four months, nearly $1.8 billion has been withdrawn, indicating a decline in investor confidence.

The shift is evident in the growing interest in cryptocurrencies. Bitmine Immersion Technologies (BMNR), often seen as a proxy for Ethereum, attracted $253 million in net inflows during the same month. Despite the recent sell-off, Tesla remains the most popular foreign stock among Korean individual traders, with holdings still valued at $21.9 billion.

The move away from Tesla comes as the company faces challenges, including increased competition from Chinese manufacturers, declining sales in crucial markets, and controversy surrounding CEO Elon Musk's political views.

Tesla's stock price is currently trading above $300, but shows short-term weakness. As of the end of the trading day, TSLA shares were valued at $333, down 3.5%. Year-to-date, the stock has fallen nearly 12%.

BNN's Perspective: The trend of South Korean investors shifting from established tech stocks to cryptocurrencies highlights the evolving nature of investment preferences. While the allure of potentially higher returns in the crypto market is understandable, investors should carefully consider the inherent risks and volatility associated with these assets. Diversification and a balanced approach remain crucial for long-term financial stability.
