Broadway Revival of "Gypsy" Starring Audra McDonald to Close

The Broadway revival of "Gypsy," featuring Audra McDonald, is set to conclude its run on August 17th. The production, which reopened at the Majestic Theatre in December, will have completed 269 regular performances and 28 previews by the time it closes.

Audra McDonald, a six-time Tony Award winner, headlined the show as Rose, the central character. The revival was directed by George C. Wolfe. The production received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical, but did not win any awards at the June ceremony. McDonald was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical, a highly anticipated category, but the award went to Nicole Scherzinger for her role in "Sunset Blvd."

While the show initially saw strong box office numbers, its grosses began to decline mid-winter and have not recovered. Capacity has been around 70 percent for several weeks. Earlier this month, the show's grosses fell to approximately $700,000 during a week when McDonald was absent.

The cast also included Danny Burstein and Joy Woods, who were also Tony-nominated. The musical features a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and choreography by Camille A. Brown. This production marked the first time the role of Rose was played by a Black woman on Broadway. Representatives from the Laurents and Sondheim estates have praised the production.

BNN's Perspective:

The closure of "Gypsy" is a reminder of the volatile nature of Broadway. While the production boasted a star-studded cast and a celebrated director, the decline in ticket sales highlights the challenges of maintaining audience interest. Despite critical acclaim and the historical significance of the casting, the show ultimately faced financial hurdles.
