AT&T Customers Could Receive Compensation in Data Breach Settlement
Millions of AT&T customers are eligible to file claims for compensation following a $177 million settlement related to two data breaches. The settlement, which still requires court approval, could provide eligible individuals with up to $7,500.
The first data breach, disclosed in March 2024, compromised the personal information of 73 million current and former AT&T account holders. This data, including birth dates and Social Security numbers, was found on the dark web. The second breach, announced in July 2024, exposed call and text records of nearly all AT&T cellular customers. These incidents led to multiple lawsuits, which were later consolidated into two class-action cases.
The proposed settlement allocates $149 million to the first settlement class and $28 million to the second. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas will hold a final approval hearing on December 3, 2025.
Impacted AT&T customers can file claims for compensation. Those affected by the first breach are eligible for up to $5,000, while those affected by the second breach are eligible for up to $2,500. Individuals impacted by both breaches could potentially receive up to $7,500. Claimants must provide documentation to support their losses, which must be traceable to the data breaches. The deadline to file a claim is November 18, 2025. Filing a claim means giving up the right to sue AT&T.
Notices are being emailed to eligible customers from the domain "attsettlement@e.emailksa.com." Customers with questions can call (833) 890-4930. Payments are not expected before December 2025, and could be delayed further by appeals and processing times.
BNN's Perspective: While this settlement offers a measure of financial redress for affected customers, it also underscores the ongoing challenges of data security in the digital age. The scale of these breaches highlights the importance of robust data protection measures and the need for companies to prioritize the privacy and security of their customers' information.
